Having high levels nike basketball shoes of confidence is so important that I spend most of my time teaching students how to develop and harnesses the power of confidence. I recently received an email from a concerned sports parent about her son folding under the pressure of big games. She said, In big games, he seems to lose confidence too easily and not perform well, but in practice looks like a million bucks. This is a very common challenge that I help athletes overcome, and is highly related to confidence (or what I call 'competitive confidence'). In my book, there is a big difference between practice self-confidence and competitive self-confidence. Anyone can feel confident and look great in practice, but the challenge is having the same high level of confidence in competition or big games, and performing well in these situations.
At any one time, young athletes either think of ways to boost confidence or hurt confidence. My approach is to help athletes improve their thinking so they can feel more confident andhelp them identify and discard thoughts or beliefs that undermine confidence. Some athletes are blessed with high levels of confidence in their abilities and it shows in competition. You might be the most positive sports nike air force 1 for womens parent in the world, but in spite of your positive parenting, your son or daughter may hold on to doubts and negative self-labels (i. e. , I choke in big games. ') that will severely limit his or her performance. The two bad habits I am talking about, which kill confidence are: Setting unrealistic expectations2. Engaging in self-doubtI talk about both of these concepts a great deal nike jordan in my work, as expectation and doubt will cripple even a healthy level of self-confidence.
However, training harder and working with the best coaches do not guarantee that you will achieve Tiger-like confidence in sports. Why do so many athletes, despite past success, massive amounts of training, and superior coaching, not develop the confidence to believe fully in their ability? From my experience working with athletes for almost 20 years as a mental game coach, these athletes sabotage their own confidence with unrealistic and strict expectations, doubt, and what I call negative self-labels or self-descriptions. In my new program, "The Confident Athlete: A 14-Day Plan for Ultimate Self-Confidence, ", I teach you how to eliminate confidence-killers that suck the life out of your self-confidence. At any one time, you either add to or take down your own level nike flyknit of confidence. Having Tiger-like confidence means that all the practice, training, and coaching you get leads to higher, consistent levels of competitiveself-confidence.
Rarely do athletes use mistakes or anger to help them perform better, but it does happen. You watch Tiger Woods get angry on the golf course, but he is able to channel his frustration to make it work for him instead of against him. Tiger becomes more focused and determined to make up for the error by refocusing his mind in the present moment. Why does the mind sometimes want to stay glued to past errors? Making mistakes does not match what you expected of yourself. You want better for yourself and think you should be a better performer. In some instances, you may display your anger or disappointment to others who are watching because you want show them you are actually a better athlete.
Once you begin to dwell on an error and beat yourself up, it is very hard to stop the cycle of negativity. You will try to avoid committing future errors, which is not a great mindset for focusing in the present moment. The best athletes in the world use mistakes to help them grow and become better athletes. They become more focused, more determined, and are able to let go of mistakes quickly so it does not affect them for several plays or shots to come. Why would your mind get in the way when you think the race really counts or is important to you? This could be from several reasons - fear of failure, tension, doubt, or self-intimidation. In many cases, the pressure you put on your own racing can cause arm pump because you are no longer able to race relaxed and tension-free like you did in practice!
Entering the zone may sound zen-like and magical, but actually achieving nike metcon this level of immersion is very simple. When your mind fully connects with achieving a goal, such as serving an ace, attention is absorbed into the present (the here and now only). Your mind is riveted to the thoughts and images that help you execute with precision. With pinpoint focus, fear of failure, worry, doubt, indecision, and other mental traps are forbidden from entering your conscious mind. In this state of concentration, mental distractions struggle to compete for your attention, but lose the battle. You cancapture this state of immersion to enhance your performance and maximize your athletic potential! |
