BRASILIA Colton Parayko Blues Jersey , Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Marina Silva has emerged as the strongest challenger to Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff in Sunday's general elections and even has the potential to derail Rousseff's re-election in a run-off.
A recent survey, published on Sept. 26, showed that Rousseff of the Workers' Party has a clear lead in the first round, with 40 percent support, versus 27 percent for Silva.
But in a possible run-off between the incumbent and Silva on Oct. 26, the two are virtually tied.
The 56-year-old Silva, one of 11 children born to a family of rubber tappers in western Acre state, become Brazil's youngest senator at the age of 36. She was environment minister and two-time presidential candidate.
She was a member of the ruling Workers' Party until 2009, when she left to join the Green Party and ran as their presidential candidate in the 2010 elections. She garnered nearly 20 percent of the vote in 2010.
In this year's race, Silva allied herself with the Socialists as running mate to their presidential candidate Eduardo Campos, because the new party she was hoping to found, called the Sustainability Network, failed to gather the signatures needed in time to be recognized by the electoral authority.
Campos, however, was killed in a plane crash on Aug. 13 in a campaign trail, pushing Silva to the forefront of the race.
Silva is considered to be more friendly than Rousseff toward business. Silva's main economic adviser, Eduardo Gianotti, has said the party's economic strategy aims to return to the so-called "macroeconomic triad" of monetary, fiscal and exchange rate discipline, which Brazil put in place during the second term of former President Henrique Cardoso (1995-2003) and was reinforced during the first term of former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (2003-2011).
According to Gianotti, Rousseff's administration has distorted these markers, leading to inflation, subsequent government intervention to prevent price rises, and an overvalued currency that hampers exports and industry.
In the first televised debate between candidates on Aug. 26, Silva presented herself as both the candidate of national unity and the candidate of renewal, promising to change business-as-usual policies that sparked anti-government protests in the summer of 2013.
She pledged to invite "the best" people from all the major political parties to join her administration.
Internationally, Silva is known as an environmentalist. She built up her fame especially during her years as Lula's environment minister from January 2003 to May 2008. She quit the post to oppose lack of government support for environmental protection policies.
After 30 years in the Workers' Party, she also quit the party to protest the practice to prioritize economic development without adequate environmental protection.
In 2007, Britain's The Guardian newspaper named her one of the 50 global figures who could save the planet.
STOCKHOLM, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- A passenger train with 70 passengers aboard derailed after colliding with a tank near Trosa, south of Stockholm. Four people has been reportedly injured, Swedish Television reported on Tuesday.
The collision occurred between Lastringe and Vagnharad, in the area where the military exercise Aurora 17 is in progress.
"Three people in the military vehicle are injured. There is also information that one person on the train has suffered minor injuries," local police said.
Those injured were sent to hospitals, and the rescue service, ambulance personnel and the police are working on site, according to Swedish Television.
The Aurora 17 military drill is currently taking place in the area, and local traffic was expected to be impacted as a result. Sweden's Armed Forces confirmed that the collision was with one of their Pansarterrangbil 360 tanks.
Local reports also said that the train is still upright and on track.
